What To Do When You Feel Lost in Your 50s: 7 Signs It’s Time to Rethink Your Life
Feeling lost in your 50s doesn't mean you've failed.
Many women feel lost in their fifties, but somehow it’s not something we talk about. It’s almost as if to admit you feel lost means you have somehow failed. But something I want to reassure you is that feeling lost in your fifties doesn’t mean you have failed; it often means you’re pausing to reassess with more self-knowledge and life experience than ever before.
Feeling uncertain is a natural part of growth, not a verdict on your worth; indeed, if you didn’t feel differently in your fifties than in your twenties, you almost certainly wouldn’t have grown in many areas.
So, if you're feeling lost in your 50s, start by asking what has changed rather than what's wrong with you.
Because your priorities, identity, relationships, career, or sense of purpose may have changed, and the life that once fit you may no longer fit you in the same way.
Even though to outsiders, your life may look fine: with a good career, relationships, family, home, responsibilities — somewhere along the way you may have started asking yourself:
“Is this really what I want for the rest of my life?”
It’s not that you have done anything wrong; it’s not that everything is falling apart, or that you need to make massive changes in every area of your life, but questions are coming to the surface such as;
I don't know what I want anymore.
I don't feel like myself.
I've lost my sense of direction.
I want something to change, but I don't know what.
I've spent years looking after everyone else. What about me?
And the answer? Feeling lost in your 50s can be a sign that your old way of living no longer fits who you are now.
If you're reading this because you recognise yourself in these feelings, keep reading. By the end, you'll have a clearer understanding of why you may feel this way and what you can begin to consider next.
Why do I feel lost in my 50s?
There isn’t one single reason for feeling lost in your fifties. There are several possible reasons a woman might feel lost or question the life she is living.
Your circumstances have changed.
By the time you get into your fifties, you will probably have had many changes in your circumstances. Children may have left home, your career may have changed, relationships may have changed, parents may need support, or you may simply have more time to think.
Your priorities have changed.
What mattered at 30 or 40 might not matter in the same way now. Now your life is heading in a different direction; the situations you gave agency to in your 20s, 30s or 40s could be completely different now, and your focus is in other areas.
You have spent years meeting other people's needs.
This is something that comes up time and again in coaching sessions. Women spend years meeting the needs of other people; people-pleasing, caring for other people; a lot of women in their fifties are the sandwich generation of caring for younger family members and older parents at the same time, and in work situations. Years putting other people first often mean putting yourself to the bottom of the list.
Your identity has become tied to your roles
Do you ever wonder when you stopped being you and became a mother, partner, employee, business owner, carer, etc.
Somewhere along the way, by the time many women reach their fifties, they have lost their identity. When one of those roles changes, you can suddenly ask:
“Who am I when I'm not doing all of those things?”
This is often where the feelings of being lost arise. Your whole sense of who you are disappears, and you no longer recognise yourself.
You have become aware of time
Not in a frightening way, but in a way that makes people more conscious of how they want to spend the years ahead. Let’s face it, by the time you reach your fifties, you have more years behind you than in front of you, and so the years that are ahead should be spent in a way that brings you purpose and fulfilment. They should be filled with what you want that will bring you happiness and contentment.
7 signs you're feeling lost in your 50s
Your life looks fine, but you don't feel fulfilled
There is a difference between having a good life and feeling fulfilled by your life. If you are feeling unfulfilled in your fifties, look closely at your life. Where are your priorities? Is it more about having a good life in terms of societal expectations? The big house, good car. holidays, material wealth? Or are you more concerned with personal satisfaction, contentment and a great sense of purpose?
Often, women who are unhappy with life after 50 have a feeling something is missing, but it is often more of an emotional absence than a material one; understanding the difference can be crucial to how you feel.
2. You keep thinking, “Is this it?”
Is there a nagging feeling inside of you that there should be more? More to life, more fun, more excitement, more purpose? You could crave more meaning, enjoyment, connection, freedom or challenge.
As we age, often a more spiritual side appears, not necessarily to do with faith but with the meaning we hold within the world, and this can make us crave a deeper yet simpler way of life.
3. You don't feel like yourself anymore
You wake up feeling unlike yourself; you look at an old photo, and it seems like you are looking at a stranger. In your fifties, changing roles, health, relationships, and energy can upend the plans you had made, leaving you on autopilot or doubting choices that once felt natural. Grief, uncertainty, and pressure can create a fog that makes small decisions heavy.
But feeling lost often marks a transition where reflection, support, and new intentions can help you rediscover who you are.
4. You want to make changes but don't know what you actually want
The problem isn’t knowing how to change; it is understanding what you want to change.
When you are feeling stuck, there is a tendency to believe change needs to happen in every area all at once. But this way leads to even more confusion and feelings of being stuck.
That’s where coaching comes in. When you can talk through how you want your life to look and then get the tools and support to make those changes.
5. You want to make changes, but fear holds you back.
Change can be scary, especially if your life seems ok on the outside. You can worry that making too many changes will upset everything and affect the other people in your life. It can create fear because if you have been living the same way for so long, any thoughts of change can cause real friction and uncertainty. But, here’s the thing: your mind will keep you in a fearful state because it is easier to do this than start making the change.
Once you have committed to making changes, your mind will begin to adapt, and the fear will start to lessen. It is also important to remember that everything you want often sits on the other side of fear.
6. You keep putting everyone else first
Other people being a higher priority is something I hear all the time in coaching sessions.
Whether it is because you are a people pleaser, you are caring for others, you find it hard to say no, you suffer from feelings of guilt and a sense of responsibility for everyone else, or you don’t know what it is you want, being last on your list of priorities is damaging.
When you put everyone else first, you almost become meaningless in your own life. Imagine answering this question;
“If you stopped asking what everyone else needed from you, what would you want?”
Then imagine the answer; this is your first step to finding what you want from your life and getting unstuck.
7. You know you don't want the next 10 or 20 years to look exactly like the last 10 or 20
Not wanting the next ten years to be like the last ten doesn’t mean you are unhappy with how your life has turned out. There is a huge distinction between;
“I hate my life.”
and
“I don't want to continue living exactly like this.”
They are not the same feelings, and it is only natural to want your life to begin to look different as you move through a new season of your life. Wanting your life to look and feel different instils purpose, fulfilment, and motivation, so reaching this conclusion means you are ready for change, and it is now time to do something about it.
Is feeling lost in your 50s a midlife crisis?
Although feeling lost in your 50s can feel like a midlife crisis, it doesn’t always fit the dramatic societal stereotype we are used to seeing.
Often it's a subtler, more complex mix of reassessment, grief, and opportunity as you confront changing relationships, career plateaus, health shifts, and unmet expectations.
Rather than a sudden breakdown, many people experience a gradual questioning of purpose and priorities that prompts reflection on what truly matters, spurring either anxiety or motivation to make meaningful changes.
Taking time to question your life doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
It means that recognising these feelings as a natural developmental phase, one that can lead to growth when met with curiosity, self-compassion, and practical planning, can help you to transform these feelings into a chance to change direction and live a more fulfilling life.
What should you do when you feel lost in your 50s?
1. Stop asking “What's wrong with me?”
Nothing is wrong with you; you have merely changed, and this is what is supposed to happen when we age. The problem is you are stuck in your old way of thinking and need to start reassessing your life, not assuming everything is wrong.
2. Look at what is missing
Ask yourself some simple questions as a way to understand what is going on, such as;
What do I want more of?
What do I want less of?
What am I tolerating?
What have I stopped doing?
What part of myself have I neglected?
The answers to these questions can start to point you in the direction you need to be going in and can identify the areas you want to change.
3. Revisit your values
We all tend to live our lives by our values, those things that are important to us. When you don’t, you will feel friction and misalignment in life. Your life can feel wrong when your daily choices no longer reflect what matters to you. This is where coaching can be particularly useful, in helping you to understand what your values are and where they are missing.
4. Don't try to reinvent your entire life overnight
This is important. You do not need to reinvent your entire life overnight to stop feeling lost. There are other simpler, less dramtaic steps that you can put inplace to start making the changes you want such as;
Try something new or revisit something you loved doing.
Learn something; a new sport, a language or a new hobby.
Reconnect with something; something that used to bring you joy and purpose.
Change one area; choose one area to work on and see what happens.
5. Give yourself permission to want something different
You don't need to justify wanting a different life simply because your current life looks acceptable to everyone else.
You are the only one living your life, and although other people are always ready and willing to offer advice and their opinions, you are the one living your life, so ultimately you have the right to choose.
If you want to do something that others don’t agree with, do it anyway. You are allowed to make decisions in your own life without having to seek permission from others.
Knowing that you want something to change is one thing. Working out what needs to change — and where to start — can be much harder.
If you're feeling stuck and don't know what your next step should be, you don't have to work it all out on your own.

How do I find my purpose after 50
Purpose doesn't necessarily mean finding one grand calling; it might come from many different areas in your life, such as;
relationships
creativity
contribution
learning
work
travel
community
helping others
personal growth
physical wellbeing
spirituality
adventure
The purpose is often created through action and exploration, rather than discovered by sitting down and waiting for an answer.
Get up and start trying something new, stretch your imagination and stop taking everyone else’s advice. Follow your heart for a change and see what happens.
You don't need to have your next chapter mapped out before you ask for help.
Coaching can give you the space to step back from everything you've been juggling, understand what you really want now and start making decisions that reflect the woman you are today.

How do I start over in my 50s?
Starting over at 50 doesn't necessarily mean throwing your life away. There are going to be many things in your life that do fit and that bring you joy and fulfilment. This isn’t about throwing everything away, but rather about making changes to get different results.
You can start over by changing:
your mindset
your routines
your relationships with yourself and others
your career
your priorities
your social life
your health habits
what you say yes and no to
how you spend your time
Just because you have reached your fifties, it doesn’t mean you have left it too late. There is no age limit on making changes to your life. There are many you can begin; the most important thing to remember is to choose an area that will be easy to start with, be kind to yourself if you are creating new habits and be patient. New directions take time and effort to implement.
What if I don't know what I want?
You don't need to know exactly what you want before you start making changes.
Sometimes you begin with:
“I know this isn't working anymore.”
Then exploration helps you discover what does work. It isn’t about finding the one perfect answer to this question; it is about creating possibilities in life. Look at times when you created something amazing in your life.
Did you have all of the answers right away? Probably not, and yet, you believed in what you wanted and kept going.
It is the same now. Just making the first move is the start of creating something fulfilling.
There are times when what you think you want will differ once you get going. Changing direction isn’t important either; it is the result and enjoying the journey that gives you purpose.
You don't need to have your whole life figured out
Feeling lost in your 50s isn't necessarily a sign that you've gone wrong. It may be an invitation to reassess the life you've created and decide what you want your next chapter to look like.
If you've reached a point where you know you want something to change but can't work out what that change should be, that's exactly the kind of situation where coaching can help.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers; that is what we do together: get the answers you are looking for to start living the life you want to live.
The difference when you have a coach guiding you is that you have the support and the accountability you need when you are making the initial changes. This support keeps you motivated and focused.
